For couples who want their wedding day to feel more personal, live art offers a colorful way to entertain guests while creating meaningful keepsakes. At Violet’s Inkpen, that experience comes to life through vibrant watercolor portraits painted in real time for guests to take home.

Based in Sussex County, Delaware, Violet’s Inkpen is a new addition to the local wedding industry, officially launching in July 2026 with a running start—booking her first client on launch day.

A Lifelong Love of Art

As a middle school math teacher, Alicia Carranza has spent her professional life helping students discover the beauty of numbers. But her creative side has always been just as important.

Growing up in a military family, she moved frequently and was homeschooled by her parents. She recalls rushing through schoolwork so she could spend the rest of the day painting. Formal art lessons and local competitions helped nurture that passion. Although she originally envisioned becoming an art teacher, limited job opportunities led her toward mathematics.

Still, art never took a backseat.

Over the years, she painted murals, completed custom commissions, and created personalized wedding portraits for friends and family. Eventually, she decided to give her artistic passion a larger role.

“I’ve always poured my heart into art, and I recently decided it was time to give that passion a full-time seat at the table,” she shared.

The business name itself nods to those early creative beginnings. As a young artist sharing her work online, she posted under the username Violetinkpen, combining her middle name, Violet, with her fascination with classic quill-and-ink calligraphy. The nostalgic name followed her through years of creative projects and ultimately became the perfect fit for her business.

A Wedding Favor That Doubles as Entertainment

Violet’s Inkpen’s signature wedding service is live guest painting, offering couples a creative alternative to traditional wedding favors.

Throughout the event, the artist creates quick, bright watercolor portraits of guests, turning the painting process into an interactive experience. Guests can gather around the artist’s station during cocktail hour or the reception and watch as friends and loved ones are captured on paper. Each portrait becomes a personalized keepsake, giving guests something meaningful to take home from the celebration.

The experience is designed to be just as entertaining as it is memorable.

“People love watching time-lapse art videos online, but watching someone capture their friends and loved ones live in real-time takes that fascination to a whole new level,” she explained.

For the artist, the most rewarding part of the experience comes when a guest sees their finished portrait.

“There is nothing quite like watching a guest’s face light up when they see their portrait finished,” she said. “That instant spark of excitement and joy never gets old — it fuels everything we do.”

Personalized Details for Every Celebration

Every wedding has its own personality, and Violet’s Inkpen offers several ways for couples to customize the experience to complement their celebration.

The live guest portraits are created exclusively in watercolor, a medium chosen for its fresh appearance and its ability to keep pace with a wedding event. Couples can also personalize the presentation with cardstock backings in different colors, textures, and patterns, plus custom-printed names, wedding dates, or event headers.

For larger guest lists, additional artists can be added to accommodate more guests. If the number of guests exceeds what can be painted during the live event, studio completion and shipping are also available.

Beyond guest portraits, Violet’s Inkpen offers larger-scale custom portraits of the couple, which can serve as wedding keepsakes, add-ons, or giveaway prizes. The business also creates custom art commissions and large-scale architectural and interior murals.

Art That Connects People

Violet’s Inkpen officially entered the wedding industry in 2026, but the artist's connection to Delaware began years earlier.

Her family settled in the area in 2007 after her father retired from 20 years of military service and accepted a management position at the General Mills plant in Federalsburg.

Although she initially wondered how she would adjust to the slower pace of southern Delaware, the community quickly won her over.

Today, the business serves couples throughout Sussex County and typically travels within a 30- to 40-mile radius. Alicia is also happy to travel farther for weddings and events.

Live guest painting begins at $200 per hour, with a two-hour minimum. Each booking includes one live artist creating custom 5-by-7-inch watercolor portraits, complete with protective sleeves for guests to take home.

Couples are encouraged to book at least one month in advance to allow time for custom materials, although bookings are accepted up to two years ahead. Popular weekend dates fill quickly, so early planning is worthwhile.

“Art, much like a wedding, is fundamentally about connection,” she shared. “My goal isn't just to create custom artwork or offer live entertainment—it's to connect with people on one of the most significant days of their lives.”

By bringing creativity, conversation, and personalized keepsakes into the wedding celebration, Violet’s Inkpen gives couples a way to make their guests feel included in something special.
